Ilwaco Fire Department Leadership Update

A Message from Mayor Eddie Hillard

October 21, 2026

I wanted to share an update with our community regarding the City's Fire Chief recruitment process and the work underway to strengthen our Fire Department.

Following an open application period, interviews with all three candidates have been completed. Throughout this process, I've carefully reviewed each candidate's qualifications, experience, and approach to leadership, while also seeking input and considering the needs of our department as we move forward.

I recognize that our community has been waiting for the appointment of a permanent Fire Chief, and I understand the importance of moving forward. At the same time, I believe this decision deserves careful consideration, not only because of the responsibilities of the position, but also because of what our department and community have endured.

My focus hasn't just been on selecting a qualified Fire Chief. It's also been on helping establish a stronger foundation for the department's future. That means strengthening our volunteer roster, improving training and operational readiness, supporting the individuals who dedicate their time to serving Ilwaco, and restoring the trust and confidence our community places in its firefighters.

This is work that will extend beyond the appointment of a new chief. It will require continued involvement and support from City leadership, our volunteers, and the community as a whole. I'm committed to being an active part of that effort.

I anticipate sharing an official announcement regarding the Fire Chief position later next week, following our upcoming City Council meeting.

Thank you for your patience, your continued interest in the future of our Fire Department, and your support for those who serve our community.

Eddie Hillard
Mayor, City of Ilwaco
